Service Dogs are important in the lives of people they serve.

The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) describes a Service Dog as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.

They are working dogs, not pets. The work or task must be directly related to the persons disability. Dogs who's sole purpose is emotional support/companionship do not qualify as a Service Dog. Those are considered Emotional Support Animals (ESA) and are NOT service dogs.

Here a Steadfast K9 we take you through the full process, from the puppy/breed selection all the way through Task training and the Public Access Test. We also offer a free Evaluation of your own personal dog, if you believe they have what it takes to be service dog. Once we've assessed that your dog is capable, we will move forward with the training. Not all dogs can be service dogs for the tasks they've been assigned to.

All dogs, but especially Service Dogs have to know how to handle all situations, as it is their job to be able handle and ignore situations which could challenge the standard pet dog. That's why it is usually important to start them young. So their is no poor muscle memory for situation or trauma associated. Its the reason Military and Police K9's ignore and are not traumatized by gunfire. They have been acclimated. Service dogs need to be able to handle potential exciting situations, crowds, loud noises, confined spaces (airplanes, etc), and still be able to provide tasks necessary to the person they are of service to.

Training can take up to, but not limited to, 2 years.

Steadfast K9 will take you through the whole process with weekly training sessions. Commands, Impulse Control, Desensitization, Task Training, and more. Service Dog Training is never Cookie Cutter. Its important to build the proper training protocol surrounding the dog and the persons life that they are to be of service to.
